The school in Woodruff began at the current site of the World’s Largest Penny in 1891. The school bell was purchased in that year for $2.00 and is now housed in the school gym at the Arbor Vitae-Woodruff Elementary School. The towns of Arbor Vitae and Woodruff formed a joint school district in 1938. Students from Arbor Vitae attended the school in Woodruff or country schools such as the Anderson School and the Hall School. The first graduating class was 1941 and the last was 1957 when Lakeland Union High School opened.
